Northern Ireland defender Aaron Hughes has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal with Scottish Premiership side Hearts.
The 37-year-old, who joined the Edinburgh outfit back in January after a brief spell with Kerala Blasters in India, admitted it was not a difficult decision for him to remain at Tynecastle.
“It was an easy decision to make because I’ve really enjoyed my time at the club,” stated Hughes, who won his 104th international cap against Germany last October. “Everything people told me about the club before I signed has shown itself to be true; it’s a great place to be.
“This is a club that can push for European spots each year. You also look at the two cups as a real possibility and it’s something we should target.”
Northern Ireland’s most capped outfield player has been sidelined with a calf injury for the past two months but is now fit and available for this weekend’s clash at home to Aberdeen.
“I’ve been injured lately but that’s part and parcel of the game,” added the Cookstown-born defender.
“I wouldn’t have committed myself to another season if I didn’t think I was able to because, regardless of everything else, it wouldn’t have been fair on myself or the club.
“There’s still plenty of incentive for me personally to get game time between now and the end of the season as there are a few internationals coming up in the summer as well and I’d love to be part of that too.”
