Forward Shay McCartan has spoken of his delight at being called up to the Northern Ireland training squad ahead of the team’s forthcoming matches against New Zealand and Azerbaijan.
The Accrington Stanley player said; “When I got the phone call from my agent he told me not to tell anyone, but I just phoned my mum and dad straight away and told them what he said.
“I’m just trying to do what I’ve been doing at Accrington - taking players on and just enjoying it really because these days don’t come along often, so I’m just trying to impress Michael and the main thing is enjoying it.
“[Michael] just told me during the first few days - don’t be nervous, just do what you’ve been doing and go out and enjoy yourself.”
Michael O’Neill will announce his final squad on Monday, with Northern Ireland v New Zealand taking place on Friday 2 June and the FIFA World Cup Qualifier away to Azerbaijan on Saturday 10 June.
