Magill voted Northern Ireland Women player of the year

Simone Magill has been voted Northern Ireland senior women’s team player of the year by Northern Ireland fans.

Magill received the most votes in a social media poll among members of the Green and White Army.

The 30-year-old Birmingham City Women striker, who was named captain of the Northern Ireland team back in October, received her 2024 player of the year trophy at training in Birmingham. It was presented to her by international team-mate Rebecca Holloway.

Magill said: “Our fans are fantastic and always get behind us, and it’s always really nice to be recognised by the fans.”

The Northern Ireland forward revealed she is excited to captain her country in 2025 and explained she wants to “really step into the role” this year, adding that being skipper fuels her fire.

“Playing for Northern Ireland was always my dream, and it still is. I want to go on and push on and keep achieving great things wearing the green shirt,” she insisted.

Magill, who made her international debut aged just 15 against Scotland in May 2010, has won 89 caps for her country to date.

She has also scored 25 goals in the green and white jersey, with 21 of them coming away from home. Her total is the second highest for Northern Ireland after Rachel Furness (38 goals).

Magill, who originally hails from Magherafelt in Co Londonderry, also played for Northern Ireland at Under-19 and U17 level.

Now playing for Birmingham in the Women’s Championship, she previously starred for both Everton and Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League, netting 12 goals in 101 WSL appearances.
