NI Player Watch | Maxwell scores on Burnley Women debut

Northern Ireland attacker Danielle Maxwell made quite an impact on her first appearance for Burnley Women.

Maxwell and international team-mate Louise McDaniel only joined the Clarets from Cliftonville Ladies last week.

But Maxwell netted for the National League North side just five minutes after coming on as a second half substitute in a 4-0 win over Derby County. Fellow international Brenna McPartlan played the full 90 minutes for the Clarets.

The 22-year-old said afterwards that she was pleased to make her debut, adding: “I really wanted to be positive when going forward and luckily I came away with a goal.”

Northern Ireland begin their latest UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign later this month and another of Tanya Oxtoby’s attackers was on the scoresheet at the weekend.

Striker Kerry Beattie scored the opener as Aberdeen Women booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Women’s Cup with a 3-0 win over Hamilton Academical Women. It was the striker’s second goal in as many games for the Dons, whom she has joined on loan from Hearts for the rest of the season.

Another Northern Ireland player on the move is midfielder Connie Scofield. She has switched from London City Lionesses to fellow Women’s Super League 2 outfit Sheffield United Women on loan for the remainder of the season. And she made her debut for the Blades yesterday as they drew 1-1 with Durham Women.

Meanwhile, in the Premier League, Conor Bradley replaced the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold on 70 minutes as Liverpool defeated Bournemouth 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium to maintain top spot in England’s top flight.

Justin Devenny was a very late sub as Crystal Palace secured a 2-0 win at Old Trafford against Manchester United.

In the Championship Alistair McCann captained Preston North End in their clash with Blackburn Rovers, however Rovers won the Lancashire derby 2-1, while George Saville had an assist for the winner as Millwall defeated Queens Park Rangers by the same scoreline.

Conor Hazard was in nets as Plymouth Argyle defeated West Bromwich Albion by two goals to one. Isaac Price came off the bench for the Baggies in the 63rd minute.

Shea Charles was man of the match as Sheffield Wednesday drew 1-1 with Luton Town at Hillsborough, while Terry Devlin was a late sub as Portsmouth held high flying Burnley to a goalless draw.

And Ciaron Brown put in another solid performance as Oxford United drew 1-1 with Bristol City.

In League One Josh Magennis scored from the spot for Exeter City, however they were defeated 4-1 away to Stevenage, and Jamie Reid provided an assist for their winning goal.

Dale Taylor weighed in with an assist for Wigan Athletic’s goal in their 1-1 home draw against Lincoln City.

Second half sub Callum Marshall had an assist for Huddersfield Town, but they lost 3-2 away to Northampton Town. Both Brodie Spencer and Dion Charles were in Huddersfield’s starting 11.

Ethan Galbraith was in the Leyton Orient team which lost 1-0 at home to Stockport, while Eoin Toal was back in Bolton Wanderers’ starting line-up after missing a few games through injury. They lost 1-0 away to Reading.

U21 international JJ McKiernan, meanwhile, was in the Burton Albion side that drew 0-0 against Barnsley.
