NIPW | Galbraith keeps O's on play-off track

Northern Ireland midfielder Ethan Galbraith scored his sixth goal of the season as Leyton Orient fought back from 3-1 down to claim a dramatic 4-3 home victory over Barnsley in League One at the weekend.

With the Londoners 2-0 down at the break, the former Manchester United player pulled a goal back shortly after the interval thanks to an assist from Spurs loanee Jamie Donley, who was also the scorer of the second O’s goal on 68 minutes.

The victory meant the O's consolidated sixth place in League One, keeping them in a play-off slot, although Reading (seventh) and Bolton (eighth) are vying for that sixth place, too.

Also in League One Dale Taylor’s 10th goal of the campaign was enough to secure all three points for Wigan Athletic in their 1-0 success against already relegated Shrewsbury Town.

In the Championship Trai Hume’s Good Friday afternoon lasted a mere seven minutes after the former Linfield defender was controversially red-carded after his ‘last man’ challenge as Sunderland subsequently lost 2-1 at Bristol City.

“The decision was probably harsh,” Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris told the club website. “It wasn’t a major foul, but it changed the dynamic of the game.

“It was an important call from the referee and after that, for 20 to 25 minutes, we were still able to create something with the ball.”

Hume, who has started 41 of Sunderland’s 43 league games this season, automatically missed today's fixture with Blackburn Rovers at the Stadium of Light.

Meanwhile, QPR forward Paul Smyth will miss the rest of the campaign after being given a three-match ban by the Football Association for violent conduct.

The incident happened in Friday’s 2-1 win over Preston North End but had not been seen by the match officials at Deepdale. It was, however, caught on camera.

In the Premier League Conor Bradley played 71 minutes for Liverpool before being replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold who scored the only goal of the game at Leicester City as Arne Slot’s side moved to within three points of securing their second league title in five years.

There was a welcome return from injury for Corry Evans who came on as a substitute for Oldham Athletic to make only his second appearance for the club as the Latics defeated Hartlepool United 2-1 at Boundary Park in the National League.

Northern Ireland striker Simone Magill scored twice as Birmingham City ran out 3-1 winners against Durham in the Women’s Championship on Sunday to close the gap on leaders London City Lionesses to just two points.

“It's a good feeling,” Magill told the club website. “We knew Durham is always a very tough game, and we had a point to prove today. I'm obviously delighted to get on the scoresheet myself, but I thought the girls overall were brilliant."

“We were saying at the end the way we had to win today was massive. It’s the first time we’ve had to respond from going a goal down,” she added. “So it showed a different side of us today, that resilience, the drive and how much we want this.

“Winning the way we did gives us a different kind of momentum going into these final two games, and it could be what we need come the end of the season.”

Also getting her name on the scoresheet over the weekend was Aberdeen striker Kerry Beattie who scored in the 5-2 defeat of Queen’s Park in SWPL 1 to take her tally to six since joining the club on loan from Hearts in January.

Finally, Northern Ireland U17 international George Feeney found the net for the third time this term as Spurs recorded a 2-1 home success over Aston Villa in the U18 Premier League.
