NIPW | Hazard the hero as Plymouth stun Liverpool

Conor Hazard pulled off several top-class saves as Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle ended Liverpool’s hopes of a quadruple with a shock 1-0 FA Cup win over the Premier League giants.

In particular the Northern Ireland keeper produced two superb saves towards the end of the fourth round contest at Home Park - from Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez efforts - but admitted after the game to ITV that it was "his job".

He said: “At the end of the day that’s my job (to make saves), isn’t it? You have to keep the ball out of the net as best you can.

“What an atmosphere... we didn’t expect that this morning. We knew it was going to be tough but the boys were brilliant and I’m proud of every single one of them.”

Plymouth Aryle’s man of the match Nikola Katic, a former Rangers player who is currently on loan at the club from FC Zurich, joked after the game: “I hated Hazard when I got here because he's a Celtic guy and I'm a massive Rangers guy, but he gave us this win today.”

Elsewhere in the competition Ethan Galbraith was in the Leyton Orient starting 11 that went a goal up against Premier League champions Manchester City before eventually losing 2-1 at the Gaughan Group Stadium.

Ali McCann’s Preston North End will be in the fifth round draw after they overcame League One side Wycombe Wanderers 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the game ended goalless after extra time.

League One leaders Birmingham City named Bailey Peacock-Farrell in their team for the visit of Newcastle United who ran out 3-2 winners at St Andrew's.

The visitors' opening goal was, however, shrouded in controversy as it seemed the Northern Ireland keeper had pulled off a stunning save only for the referee to rule the ball had already crossed the line before Peacock-Farrell’s heroics.

Meanwhile, in the Championship, Isaac Price started his first game for West Brom who overcame Shea Charles’ Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at the Hawthorns.

Trai Hume provided a superb cross for Sunderland’s opening goal in their 2-2 draw at home to Watford.

Following his move to Carrow Road last week, Ruairi McConville was an unused substitute for Norwich City as they drew against Derby County.

On the goalscoring front, striker Lee Bonis netted his ninth of the season as he hit the winner in ADO Den Haag’s 2-1 victory away to Volendam in the Eerste Divisie and Cameron McGeehan hit the only goal of the game in Northampton Town’s League One win at Mansfield.

Northern Ireland Under-19 international Lewis Trickett, who has joined AFC Telford on a month’s loan from Accrington Stanley, made his debut for the Southern League side in their 2-2 draw at Bishop’s Stortford.

In the National League North Megan Bell started her first game for Nottingham Forest Women who beat Liverpool Feds 4-0 at home and Gemma McGuinness took her tally of goals for the season to eight as AFC Bournemouth beat Bridgewater United 7-0 in Division One South.

Winger Kieran Morrison, who was in Liverpool's squad for the Champions League game away to PSV Eindhoven at the end of last month, scored for Liverpool’s U21 side who drew 1-1 in their Premier League 2 encounter at Southampton, and former Glentoran player Rhys Walsh scored and also contributed two assists as Sunderland U21s defeated Wolves 5-0.

Finally, in the U18 Premier League, Cole Brannigan was on target twice as Aston Villa’s youth team lost 4-2 to Southampton and George Feeney set up two of Tottenham’s goals in their 5-3 success against Brighton and Hove Albion U18s.
