Northern Ireland defender Jamal Lewis made history over the weekend when he became the first British player to turn out for top Brazilian outfit Sao Paulo.
The 26-year-old, who moved to the Serie A side on a season-long loan from Newcastle United earlier this month, made his debut after coming on as a 73rd minute substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 victory away to Cruzeiro.
On the goalscoring front, Joely Andrews found the net in Hearts' 3-0 home win over Aberdeen in the Scottish Women’s Premier League which helped them to stay in second place on goal difference behind Rangers.
“It’s been a good start,” admitted Andrews, who has now scored three goals in seven games since her move to Edinburgh. “We had a great result last week so it was important we continued to build on that and it’s always nice to be amongst the goals.
“I’ve learned loads from being here and getting the opportunity to train full-time will definitely help improve my game.”
Meanwhile, Enniskillen native Casey Howe made her debut for Nottingham Forest Women when she played the final three minutes as a substitute in the 1-1 Northern Premier Division draw with Burnley Women who had Brenna McPartlan in their starting line-up.
In the Premier League in England, Conor Bradley came on as a substitute for the fourth game in a row as Liverpool lost 1-0 at home to Nottingham Forest.
There were starts in the Championship for George Saville, Ciaron Brown, Ali McCann (his first of the season), Shea Charles, Trai Hume and Daniel Ballard who put through his own goal as Sunderland lost 3-2 to Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle.
Unfortunately Rooney was without the services of injured goalkeeper Conor Hazard who has been ruled out until December after having an operation on his ankle.
In League One, it was a disappointing weekend for Eoin Toal and Dion Charles who both started for Bolton Wanderers in their 4-0 home defeat to Huddersfield Town for whom Callum Marshall provided an assist for their opening goal.
Speaking to the club website after the game, Town boss and former Northern Ireland international Michael Duff said: “Callum gives you what Callum does, runs, chases, presses everything and has got some quality as well.”
Finally, former Larne striker Lee Bonis is still waiting for his first goal as he played his third full 90 minutes for Dutch side ADO Den Haag in their 2-0 defeat away to Den Bosch.
