The Irish FA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Council member and Junior Cup Committee member Robert Doherty after a short period of illness.
Robert was the hard-working secretary of Newtownbreda FC as well as applying his energies to the Northern Amateur Football League, County Antrim FA and Irish FA. He was a long-serving member of the Amateur League Committee, the County Antrim Junior Shield Committee and the Irish FA’s Junior Cup Committee.
Irish FA President Conrad Kirkwood said: “Committees don’t just need talkers, they need doers. Robert was exactly that: a very willing and hard worker. He could often be seen manning gates at games, attending as the Irish FA representative at the various ties of the round, and generally working away in the background to ensure things were getting done.
"Much of Robert’s work was behind the scenes but that didn’t mean it went unappreciated. Earlier this year the County Antrim FA Junior Shield Committee made a presentation to Robert’s wife Lorraine in recognition of his personality and hard work as well as making him a Life Member.
"Personally, I found Robert hugely supportive both in and outside the game. 'The Doc' will be sadly missed by his club but also at all levels of the game. Our condolences go out to Lorraine and the family circle."
