NI Player Watch | Marshall scores for Huddersfield

Callum Marshall fired home his third goal of the season as Huddersfield Town made it back-to-back league wins following a 3-1 home success over Bristol Rovers at the weekend.

The 19-year-old Northern Ireland striker, who is on a season-long loan at the EFL League One club from West Ham United, put the Terriers 2-0 up seven minutes from the break with a first-time left foot shot into the corner of the net.

“Everyone is buzzing inside the dressing room after that,” declared the teenager. “We know that we played well and limited them to one shot on target.

“I had my first loan at West Bromwich Albion, which didn’t work out very well, so I wanted to come here to Huddersfield Town and make sure I played and show the manager I was good enough.

“Hopefully I get a good amount of games under my belt this season and go back to West Ham as a man rather than just an Under-21s player.”

Also on the scoresheet in League One over the weekend was Northampton Town midfielder Cameron McGeehan who took his tally for the campaign to four in the 1-0 win over Leyton Orient. In League Two Carl Johnston scored a consolation goal for Fleetwood Town who lost 3-1 at Port Vale.

In the Scottish Premiership Northern Ireland U21s striker Makenzie Kirk scored his first goal for St Johnstone as they ran out 3-0 winners over Ross County who ended the contest with just nine men.

Makenzie’s dad, former Northern Ireland international Andy Kirk, who is also the St Johnstone caretaker boss, said after the game: “I’m super proud to see Makenzie score but I was just glad to see the third goal go in because when you’re sitting at 2-0 you just want the game dead.

“I’m really pleased for him and I’m glad he’s off the mark in the Premiership.”

In the Premier League Conor Bradley was not in the Liverpool squad for the game with Chelsea, while 36-year-old Jonny Evans made his seventh appearance of the season for Manchester United in the 2-1 win over Brentford at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, in the Championship, Trai Hume, Ciaron Brown, Ali McCann, George Saville and Shea Charles all started for their respective clubs and Under-21 international Terry Devlin came on as a substitute for Portsmouth in their 2-1 win at QPR for only his fourth appearance of the season.

Elsewhere midweek hat-trick hero Isaac Price started for Standard Liege in Belgium's top flight on Sunday as they chalked up their first win in four games with a 2-1 victory at home to Charleroi.

In the Women’s Championship Simone Magill made her first start for Birmingham City who stay top of the table after a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over Southampton at St Mary’s.

It was Magill’s first time back at the stadium where she sustained an ACL injury in Northern Ireland’s opening Women's Euro 2022 match against Norway over two years ago.

The striker told irishfa.com: “It was nice to come back and have such a good performance and make good memories here and also to come away with the three points.

“I was delighted to start the game and be involved after being injured at the start of the season. It’s great to go into the international break at the top of the table."

“I’m really excited to be meeting up with the international squad again,” added the former Everton and Aston Villa forward. “Croatia is going to be a different challenge for us but we will get our heads down, work hard and hopefully we can get the job done.”

Finally, striker Braiden Graham scored from the penalty spot and contributed an assist in an Everton U18s win over Newcastle United, while another former JD Academy and Linfield player, Ceadach O’Neill, was on the scoresheet for Arsenal U18s as they lost 4-2 at home to Aston Villa.
