Match officials from Northern Ireland have been learning about the role of the video assistant referee.
Eight Irish FA referees and assistant referees who operate in the NIFL Premiership and NIFL Championship, and who are all on the FIFA list of match officials, travelled to Denmark to take part in a VAR course run by the Dansk Boldspil-Union (Danish FA).
Along with counterparts from Denmark, they completed theoretical training regarding the principles of VAR and also had VAR simulation training and experienced non-competitive onfield officiating while using VAR.
Andrew Davey, Senior Refereeing Manager at the Irish Football Association, said: “It was a great experience for officials from the Irish FA to be VAR trained and hopefully it will lead to some appointments in European competitions.”
The group included NIFL Premiership referees Jamie Robinson and Ben McMaster, NIFL Championship referee Louise Thompson and NIFL Premiership assistant referees Adam Jeffrey, Andrew Nethery, John Doherty, Stephen Bell and Rachel Greer.
