JD Club NI’s U14s will be in action in the annual Madrid Cup this weekend.
The Northern Ireland boys are jetting off to Spain later today and will initially take part in a group phase tomorrow (Friday 13 September) at Polideportivo Jose Caballero stadium with the aim of securing a place in the top tier within the competition’s latter stages.
Their first opponents will be the U14 side from La Liga outfit Getafe, while Austrians Flyeralarm Admira are next up. Their third and final game tomorrow will see them come up against Swedish outfit Brommapojkarna.
And over the weekend they will play more matches to determine their overall placing.
Stephen Lynch’s squad will be hoping to improve on last year’s showing when a Club NI U14 team finished 17thoverall out of 32 teams after winning four and drawing one of their seven games at the international youth football tournament.
The annual Madrid Football Cup, staged at Alcobendas in Madrid, features the youth sides of leading European clubs, including Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, Porto and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as teams from around the world.
National U14 teams are also included in the mix at the competition. Northern Ireland and Norway are the guest countries at the event this year.
