Hat-trick hero Aimee Mackin sends Newry City through to the semis

Tonight saw the two big hitters in the previous round come face to face in the Tie of the Quarter-Finals in this year's Electric Ireland Women's Challenge Cup with Glentoran Utd taking on Newry City Ladies FC.

It was Glentoran who started on top and it only took 10 minutes for them to take the lead.

A close range finish by Cleo Neece Taggart gave the home side the lead and from then on they seemed to find the ball first.

The home side had a few excellent chances but just could not convert them.

Glentoran were enjoying a good period, however the bubble burst when Newry City's Aimee Mackin hit a 25-yard daisycutter to draw the sides level on the half hour.

The second half saw Newry City Ladies rejuvenated and within five minutes Aimee Mackin picked up the ball just inside the Glentoran half and after a short run she dispatched the ball with a stinging shot from 30 yards that gave the keeper no chance.

Newry were now playing neat football and seemed to have the game under control when Glentoran changed their game plan, pushing up onto the Newry defence. This was well soaked up by Newry and in the 85th minute Aimee Mackin produced a moment of skill anyone would be proud of. She picked up a pass, lobbed one player and on the half-volley lobbed the keeper, completing her hat-trick.

Glentoran Belfast United tried to the final whistle but it was Newry City Ladies' night and they sealed their place in the semi-finals draw.

Final score: Glentoran Utd 1-3 Newry City Ladies FC
