The Irish Football Association remembers

The Irish Football Association has held its annual Act of Remembrance to honour footballers who lost their lives while fighting to preserve our freedoms.

The remembrance service, which was staged at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park, was organised by Irish FA President Conrad Kirkwood. Pastor Richard Donnan, the association’s chaplain, led the worship.

The names of the fallen were read by the Irish FA President, while wreaths were laid by the President on behalf of the Irish FA and the football family and by Gary McAllister from the Amalgamation of Official Northern Ireland Supporters’ Clubs.

The service featured Bible readings by Brian White (Irish FA Council) and Gary McAllister, while the congregation sang the hymns ‘Abide With Me’ and ‘When I Survey The Wondrous Cross’.

Each year the Irish FA acknowledges members of the football family who died in the line of duty while serving in the armed forces in the two world wars and other conflicts.

The Irish FA President said: "The Act of Remembrance is important as it helps us to remember those who gave their lives for us. For me, the Act is made all the more memorable by being able to put faces and personal stories to the names."

This year the roll of honour was compiled by Nigel Henderson from History Hub Ulster, who researched names, pictures and personal stories.
