Team news
There were six changes from the team that lost to Slovenia in midweek with Alex Watson, Jack Faloona, Kalum Thompson, Christian Coyle, Caedach O'Neill and Kian Maynes were brought into the starting XI. Kai Morgan, skipper Noah McDonnell, Scott Hamilton, Glenn McCourt and Harry Allen all retained their starting berths.
As it happened
It was an even opening with no clearcut chances created by either side until Caedach O'Neill saw his 30-yard shot, which looked destined for the top corner, clawed away by Ben Schmit. The ball bounced close to the line and swept away by the Luxembourg defence.
O’Neill was then again denied by Schmit, who got down well to his right to save his effort from just inside the 18-yard box.
Despite Northern Ireland dominating possession with some solid build-up as Luxembourg looked to sit in and hit on the counterattack, it remained level at the break.
With 48 minutes on the clock Luxembourg took the lead when their striker latched on to a long ball over the top before rounding Morgan and slotting home.
Late in the second session Northern Ireland drew level courtesy of a penalty from O’Neill who had been fouled in the box after a jinking run.
