Building Better Football Facilities

Developing high-quality football facilities is essential for the sport’s growth at all levels, from grassroots to professional play.  Safe, accessible and well-maintained facilities not only nurture talent and encourage participation but also strengthen community engagement by providing inclusive spaces for people to connect through football.  Modern pitches and equipment, and quality infrastructure attract more players and spectators, enhancing the overall experience and fostering a sense of belonging.  Additionally, investing in football facilities brings wider social and economic benefits, offering opportunities for disadvantaged and underrepresented groups, promoting physical well-being, and stimulating local economies through increased community involvement and sports-related activities.

The information provided on this page draws on the Irish FA’s experience in football facility development, offering guidance from a football perspective.  It is not a replacement for professional, technical or legal advice.  Clubs are advised to consult with qualified facility development experts and professionals for support.  As best practice, new facility developments should comply with the safety standards outlined in the 6th edition of the Sports Grounds Safety Authority (SGSA) 'Green Guide' and meet all applicable statutory, regulatory, and common law health and safety requirements. Responsibility for health and safety matters remains entirely the full and sole responsibility of the club and/or venue operator.
