THE Northern Ireland squad travelled to Moscow on Wednesday ahead of Friday’s opening World Cup Qualifier against Russia.

Currently ranked 13th in the FIFA World Rankings, Russia under new manager Fabio Capello will be looking to get their campaign off to a winning start; and Northern Ireland are under no illusions about how difficult a game it will be.

“It will be a tough game; but we have to go out and try and perform well,” said defender Craig Cathcart.

“Northern Ireland has a bit of an underdog mentality; we don’t have as many players to pick from as other countries.  But we have a lot of quality players; players playing in the Premier League and players with a lot of experience.”

And sometimes in the past, little Northern Ireland have shown what they can do against the top nations.

Just step back to 2005 – tomorrow (Friday 7 September) marks the 7th anniversary of Northern Ireland’s 1-0 win over the mighty England in a World Cup Qualifier at Windsor Park.

The game against Russia on Friday at the Lokomotiv Stadium, Moscow; kicks-off at 7.00pm local time (4.00pm BST).  Michael O’Neill’s side will then take on Luxembourg at Windsor Park on Tuesday (September 11); kick-off: 7.45pm.
