WITH support from Comic Relief, the Irish Football Associationís Peace III funded Football for All recently hosted the North West Street League Cup in Derry~Londonderry.

The promotional cup took place on 24 August at Magee, with the winners, Poleglass and five other Belfast Street League teams travelling down to participate in the cup. The cup was a taster event for North West teams to encourage their participation in the NW League. Poleglass were the winners of the Cup and brought it back to Belfast.

The NW Street League is a 5-a-side football league for disadvantaged groups such as the homeless, drug and alcohol dependant, refugees, asylum seekers and long term unemployed representing various hostels, community groups and action projects. The league will replicate Belfast Street League (BSL) which has been very successful over the past few years.

The NW league will have clear links with the Belfast Street League, through yearly tournaments similar to the NW Street League Cup. The 2013 Homeless World Cup is a brand new chapter for Northern Ireland Street League as a panel of players will be chosen from within the two leagues to represent Northern Ireland in the 2013 Homeless World Cup, in Poland.

Football for All Development Officer, Sarah Keys, said: “The North West Street League has been received with great enthusiasm in the city. The league was one of the first tasks of my post and it is part of our overall Football for All project which aims to create a safe, fun and inclusive culture throughout all levels of the game.

“We have now started the league with Jefferson Court taking the early lead but Bytes, Methodist City Mission and Simon Community all will be looking to take the top spot.”
