A League for all seasons - that’s the Euro Electrix NIWFA League.
Encouraged by the huge success of ladies football in the Olympics, which attracted thousands of spectators, and another splendid summer of its own, which is currently winding down in its own inimitable fashion with a feast of star-studded Cup finals, it is hoped to re-establish winter youth football and continue the cycle of action throughout the year.
The idea is to attract and encourage young enthusiasts to carry on playing ladies football, which sometimes has to stop when the summer action ends. Last winter promised a future for the sport in winter with some clubs competing, and Stephen Bingham is looking for a hearty response from football clubs this time around.
Stephen, an official with the Lisburn club that has just won the Division One championship, is heading a group to implement and oversee the running of the sections, of which there will be two age groups, U-15 and U-17.
Said Stephen: “We want an expansion on the amount of clubs and players that took part last year so that there will be regular, varied and competitive football to sustain interest for all those want to take part. So, we are asking clubs to really support the venture and invite them to join in. Ladies football is flourishing. We don’t want to close down in the winter.”
It is intended to commence U-15 action in September (starting group age 1st January 1998). Teams will play home and away with matches being played on days agreed by both clubs. The U-17 section will begin in January 2013 (DOB 1st January 1996).
Clubs must be NWFA affiliated and all clubs wishing to participate should contact Stephen at stephenbingham137 [at] btinternet.com, or ring 07809712445 by 1st Sept 2012, or as soon as possible. He will advise and help anyone interested.
There will be some magnificent trophies up for grabs as the winter football will be sponsored by League backers, Euro Electrix, who also sponsored the youth summer programme.
So, back Stevie and his team. Don’t sit on the sidelines – JOIN IN! Attract the youth and build stars for the future.
