THE Northern Ireland Under 17 girls’ preparations for the European championships finished with a narrow defeat to Scotland.

Alison Nicholl looked on as her side gave an outstanding performance despite conceding two penalties. This was the second time in three days that the two sides had met, with Northern Ireland bidding to bounce back from the previous meeting, which saw Scotland run out as rampant 5-1 winners.

And it seemed that the afternoon would take a familiar turn as Scotland were awarded a penalty after just a minute of play. This was soon converted and the fixture looked daunting from early on.

However Northern Ireland responded well and took control of the game convincingly; boasting most of the possession whilst pressing for an equaliser.  Wingers Amy Burden and Samantha Kelly utilised possession well with some good play down both flanks, sending crosses into the danger area that the Scotland defenders struggled to deal with.  Some solid play in the middle of the park from Chloe McCarron and Aoife Curran saw Northern Ireland get their deserved goal, and in spectacular fashion.

A 40-yard effort from Chloe McCarron proved too much for the Scotland keeper as it looped over her and into the net.  A deserved leveller; despite Northern Ireland dominating, Scotland were still an attacking threat, with shots from the edge of the box.  Jackie Burns proved equal to the efforts making a series of excellent saves.  With the sides level at half time Alison was impressed with the mood in the changing room.

“The girls were very positive, which was fantastic to see given the nature of our previous encounter with Scotland. In the last game we were pushed off the ball and lost out on the physical aspect, this was not the case today. The girls were out to prove themselves and conducted themselves very well. Great attitude.”

Into the second half and more of the same from Northern Ireland, boasting superior possession and dominance in midfield; exposing both full backs through the wings. Conceding another penalty, Northern Ireland found themselves a goal down again despite their infallible performance, notably from Chloe McCarron who was sublime throughout.  Heading into the last 10 minutes, Northern Ireland pushed for that all important equaliser, but felt that it wouldn’t be their day. A dangerous ball from the wing firing agonisingly across the face of goal and the chance gone.  Unfortunately, Northern Ireland couldn’t cap such a fine display with a win, although Coach Alison Nicholl was pleased with the girls’ performance and attitude.

“It’s disappointing in the outcome, but our performance was fantastic. The girls showed great determination and were on top for the majority of the game. Aside from the two penalties, we were under no real pressure from Scotland, a few corners at most but these were dealt with comfortably by our defenders. An excellent performance.”
