In preparation for the European Qualifiers Northern Ireland faced Scotland in a double header. First of these was played sat 25th Aug. Northern Ireland started the game brightly with Aimee Mackin making some good penetrating runs down the left and Amy Burden also threatening down the right. Annie Timoney and Moya Feehan also looked dangerous up front. However Scotland took control of the game early on and in midfield where their no 7 dictated a lot of the play.
The Northern Ireland defence of Emma McFarland, Catherine Sheridan, Clara Mulvenna and Hannah Doherty found themselves under pressure as Scotland pressed down the flanks and in behind. The first goal came on 14 mins when a ball broke from a Scotland corner which was not cleared. The Scottish forward latched onto this and finished from close range.
Scotland were to get their second goal shortly after when they attacked down the right and the cross was scrambled in again following some indecision from the girls in green.
Northern Ireland did start to get back into the game and looked dangerous in attack and when they kept possession. They had started to press high up the pitch and Aimee Mackin on the left converted this pressure by winning the ball from Scotland's right back and fired the ball over the GK From 35 yards to stun the Scotland defence.
This seemed to lift the girls momentarily but Scotland were quick on the counter and were exploiting the spaces in behind midfield and defence. A cross from the right found a Scottish forward unmarked at the back post who headed home from close range to end the first half.
Second half saw Northern Ireland make some changes and Northern Ireland had a good spell of possession but then gave the ball away. Scotland punished this and got behind the Northern Ireland back 4 which resulted in Jackie Burns bringing the forward down to concede a penalty. She was replaced by Jessica Poots and Scotland converted the penalty into the bottom right hand corner.
Scotland got their fifth when they won the ball high up the field from an Northern Ireland goal kick. Northern Ireland were slow to react and the ball went in off the left post.
Not their best performance in terms of effort and decision making but the young squad will hope to learn from this and go out on Monday and give a better performance and account of themselves.
