Local Powerchair Football Club, Trailblazers won the Fingal Council Harmony Cup on Saturday beating Midlands 1 0 in an entertaining Final in Sportslink, Santry, near Dublin.

The competition got off to a great start for the Newtownabbey based Trailblazers as they defeated Sporting Fingal 2nds 6-0 with an impressive performance in the 1st Round. What was most pleasing for Coach Sharlene Rainey was the fact that all four players got on the scoresheet. Scott Hilland netted twice with Conor O’Kane, William Graham and Mark Bigger getting a goal apiece and an unfortunate own goal from a Fingal defender completing the scoring.

The 2nd round match was a close affair. Parkvilla from Meath provided stiff opposition for the confident Trailblazers. In a tight game it was the Trailblazers who ran out 2-0 winners with goals coming from the free-scoring Hilland and the impressive O’Kane.

The Semi-Final brought the Trailblazers together with Sporting Fingal’s first team. They have met several times over the past two seasons and the games are always competitive with one goal usually separating the sides. This was to be no different. The game finished goalless after normal time and it took a special Golden Goal from that man Hilland to send the Trailblazers through to the Final where they would face Midlands, the current League Champions from West Meath and Offaly.

Hilland continued his goalscoring form into the Final scoring with a crisp finish after just 5 minutes. 5 goals in 4 games an impressive return for the attacking midfielder. Midlands reacted well to going behind, upping the tempo and putting the Trailblazers on the back foot. Indeed the Trailblazers were under pressure for the remainder of the game but superb defending from O’Kane, Graham and Bigger got the clean sheet that they richly deserved and meant the Cup heading back to Northern Ireland for the First Time.

The IFA would like to congratulate the coaches, players and families involved with the Trailblazers Powerchair Football Club. The recent successes are just rewards for the dedication and application of the group.
