DID YOU KNOW?

Release Date: 31/05/2012

Author: Marshall Gillespie

NORTHERN Ireland’s last game against the Netherlands was back in October 1977 – a game in which George Best made the last of his 37 appearances for his country.

The World Cup Qualifier on 12 October that year at Windsor Park was won 1-0 by the Dutch.

On Saturday, Michael O'Neill's Northern Ireland team will take on the Netherlands in an International friendly at the Amsterdam Arena and ahead of the game Marshall Gillespie brings us some interesting facts.

·         WITH 92 caps David Healy is Northern Ireland’s most capped outfield player, though he still needs to make another 28 appearances before he overtakes the all-time cap holder Pat Jennings who is on 119.

·         ONLY four members of Michael O’Neill’s 24 man squad to face the Netherlands have actually scored for Northern Ireland at senior level. They are: David Healy, Paddy McCourt, Grant McCann and Corry Evans.

·         NORTHERN Ireland’s 1-0 win over Slovenia in September 2010 and the 4-0 success over the Faroe Islands last August are the only victories that they have recorded in their last 25 International matches.

·         THE last occasion that Northern Ireland won a friendly International was on 26 March 2008 when they enjoyed a 4-1 success over Georgia at Windsor Park thanks to two goals from Kyle Lafferty and one a piece from David Healy and Peter Thompson.

·         NORTHERN Ireland goalkeeper Lee Camp made exactly 50 appearances for his club Nottingham Forest last season keeping 12 clean sheets and conceding 71 goals.

·         GEORGE McCartney is the last Northern Ireland player to score on his full International debut when he found the net in a 3-0 win over Iceland in a World Cup Qualifier at Windsor Park on 5 September 2001.

The game at the Amsterdam Arena on Saturday kicks-off at 8.00pm (local time).
