EXCELLENCE SQUAD RETURNS FROM LUXEMBOURG

Release Date: 18/05/2011

TWENTY-ONE players from the Irish FAs Stena Line Irish Sea Ferries Excellence Centres were selected to travel to Luxembourg recently for two friendly games against the Luxembourg U15 national team.

In the first game the Northern Ireland U14 Select Development Squad was unlucky to be beaten 3-0 by a strong Luxembourg side, with all the goals coming in the second half. “We expected a tough game, as we were facing older boys who train four times a week in their national centre,” said Irish FA County Performance Coach, Christophe Moulin. “We tried to play from the back but could not find spaces against a physical and well organised side.”

However, the players from the Irish FA’s Stena Line Irish Sea Ferries Excellence Centres were determined to learn from the experience and in the second game the boys really stepped up a gear.  Christophe added: “For the second game we changed the whole squad, in order to give everybody a start; while Luxembourg only made one change to their starting XI, so the boys knew that they had to compete if they wanted a chance to get a performance.

“We started very well and created three good opportunities before going in front with a goal from Jordan McAuley.  Then we conceded an unlucky equaliser (own goal) against the run of play. However the boys continued to pass the ball well, keep the shape and win the challenges. We created more scoring opportunities and deserved our 4-1 win.  In the second half McAuley got his second; with Gary Lavery and Andrew Hoey also getting on the score sheet.”

“The trip went really well, although the boys were taken out of their comfort zone - different climate, language and food habits, with the squad having the same meals as the other sports people in the National Institute of Sports,” said Christophe. “It was a fantastic experience for all of us on and off the pitch. We were pleased to face twice a competitive opponent and see that our young players showed the ability to adapt very quickly after the first match.

“Many thanks have to be given to the Luxembourg FA for their invitation, kindness and hospitality. They did everything they could for us and our boys will keep great memories from their stay in Luxembourg. They will also have a better insight about life on the continent for football players. The trip was a beneficial addition to our training programme, which consists of 20 sessions from September to June.”
