The Northern Ireland Under 16 team suffered a losing start to their Sky Sports Victory Shield campaign with a 5-0 defeat by England at Stangmore Park Dungannon.
The visitors attacked from the start with Adam Armstrong and Jordan Rossiter testing Brett Long with fierce shots. After 17 minutes a corner on the right produced a goalmouth scramble and England skipper Rossiter shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
Northern Ireland looked to have weathered the early storm and forced a corner on the right but Jordan Thompson’s inswinging cross was headed clear by Kieran Dowell with Callum Byers about to pounce.
After 20 minutes England went in front with a stunning goal. A corner on the left by Rossiter was headed on by Isaih Brown and Tom Brewitt sent a crisp volley into the roof of the net.
Northern Ireland missed a great chance to draw level when Thompson shot across the goal with only the keeper to beat and then the winger fired in a left foot shot which Freddie Woodman saved comfortably.
However, the Northern Ireland recovery was halted on 29 minutes as England winger Demetre Mitchell doubled the leeway when he raced through the home defence and sent a fierce dive into the net from the edge of the box.
One minute before the break Rossiter added the third goal with a piledriver which gave Long no chance.
Seven minutes after the restart substitute Callum Cooke increased the lead, sliding the ball into the corner of the net from 15 yards and 11 minutes later the talented midfielder added his second goal when the home defence failed to clear the ball and Cooke netted from close range.
The Under 16s will play Belgium in two games at Donegal Celtic Park on Tuesday 9th October, kick off 7.00pm, and at Ballymena on Thursday 11th October, kick off 7.00pm, before resuming their Sky Sports Victory Shield campaign away to Scotland at Dumfries on Friday 26th October.
