Under 16 Schools’ International Invitation International
Wednesday 19 September 2012 at New Grosvenor Kick Off 5.00pm
Northern Ireland 2 v 0 Finland
Andrew Mooney 18, 30 mins
After a convincing 2-0 victory over Finland at Shamrock Park on Monday night, Northern Ireland Under 16 Manager Desi Curry made 9 changes to the team for their second meeting at the New Grosvenor on Wednesday night.
The visitors started brightly and might have gone ahead after 4 minutes when Roni Peiponen met a cross from Fredrik Jensen to send a powerful header goalbound but keeper Conor Hazard, making his international debut, flung himself across the goal to tip the ball over the bar.
Against the run of play Andrew Mooney opened the scoring when he ghosted in at the far post to connect with a free kick from Jamie Dunne
Finland pressed forward and Oskari Qvick was just off target with a fine volley. On the half hour Mooney doubled the lead, rifling a right foot shot into the corner of the net after the Finnish defence failed to clear a cross from Ben Doherty.
Just before the interval Viljami Vuorenmaa was inches wide with a left foot shot from the edge of the box. On the restart Finland went close with fine efforts by Peiponen and Qvick producing great saves by Hazard. However, on the hour the keeper made a rare mistake, slicing his clearance, but with an open goal at their mercy the Finns failed to capitalise.
Substitutes Seanna Foster and Stephen Fallon made an immediate impact, carving open the visitors defence, to create an opening for Jonathan smith who saw his right foot shot drift just outside an upright.
In the final minute Roni Peiponen, Finland’s most dangerous forward, headed against the post.
Northern Ireland’s next match is against England in the Sky Sports Victory Shield at Dungannon on Thursday 27 September, kick off 7.35 pm, in a game which will be televised live by Sky TV. Any school or youth group wishing to attend the game can obtain a group pass by emailing edwinferris@yahoo.co.uk.
