NI UNDER 21 SQUAD NAMED

Release Date: 08/08/2012

Author: By Sam Woodside

NORTHERN Ireland U21 manager Stephen Robinson has named a 20 player squad for the friendly international against Hungary in Tatabanya on Wednesday (August 15).

The club includes a number of uncapped players as well as three players from Dankse Bank Premiership clubs Cliftonville, Linfield and Glentoran; and two players from Airtricity League side Derry City.

Despite selecting a side that is lacking several players due to domestic commitments; Robinson is relishing the occasion and believes it will be a fantastic opportunity for his players.

“It’s a great occasion giving us a chance to look at the other squad members and see what they can do for the team,” he said.  “Some of the lads have been brought forward from Under 19 level so it will be a big occasion to show their talents on a bigger stage.”

When asked how he feels his side will perform against a strong side like Hungary, Robinson backed his team to perform well.

“It will be a great match. Hungary are a fantastic side with some great players, but then again so are we.  Again, with some players out of our squad, our younger lads will have something to prove and a spot to fight for.  At this age clubs tend to stand up and take notice of these players, which has been the occasion with some players in the Hungary squad.  Maybe our players can showcase their talents and put themselves out on the shop window.”
