NORTHERN Ireland suffered a 5-3 defeat to Chile in their opening Milk Cup Elite game at the Ballymena Showgrounds.
Scoreless at half-time, Chile moved in front eight minutes into the second half only for Burney's Shay McCarten to level for Stephen Robinson's side two minutes later with a curling finish into the top corner.
However, the South American visitors went on to race into a 4-1 lead before Manchester United's Luke McCullough pulled one back with a header from a James Knowles cross.
Chile added a fifth before the end but there was still time for Michael McLellan to grab Northern Ireland's third from the spot following a foul on Liam McAlinden.
Elsewhere in the Elite Section, Denmark defeated the United States 1-0 while Mexico thumped Turkey 5-0.
Those free-scoring Mexicans provide Northern Ireland's next opposition on Monday night at the Coleraine Showgrounds (8pm).
