BUDDING young footballs in Newry and Mourne had a ball at the recent Irish FA Nutty Krust Summer Soccer School in Kilkeel.
Co-ordinated by the Irish FA’s Grassroots Development Officers and staffed by qualified coaches, the Soccer Schools are the ideal way to get your children active over the summer months. The Soccer Schools will be run at venues across the country and will be attended by thousands of boys and girls.
“In Newry and Mourne this year we have been fortunate to have all female coaching staff and this has helped to encourage more girls to get involved whilst proving that our courses are inclusive as well as producing high quality coaching sessions,” said Irish FA Grassroots Development Officer, Malcolm Roberts.
“Female participation has been of a strong focus in Newry and Mourne for the past five years and now we are experiencing the benefits of that strategy in terms of producing qualified female coaches, some of whom currently play in the NIWFA and understand some of the barriers to participation for girls. Equally, having all female staff has seen a shift in attitude in some of the boys who seem more attentive to verbal instructions.
Irish FA Head of Grassroots Football, Lee Carroll added: “The Irish FA’s Nutty Krust Summer Soccer Schools are specifically designed to get the best out of the players during the week with age appropriate coaching sessions to develop such skills as dribbling, passing, turns and shooting etc.
"At this year’s courses 50 children will be selected to attend the annual Irish FA ‘Search for a Star’ event, which will see the children compete in a series of skills challenges with the chance of becoming an Irish FA sponsored player and winning a year’s worth of training gear.”
