NI INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT SCORE PROJECT

Release Date: 04/07/2012

NEWRY City Ladies SCORE Coach, Davy Welshman and Northern Ireland international, Moya Feehan recently delivered a free coaching session to pupils at Windsor Hill Primary School in Newry.

Playing in Division Three of the Euro Electrix NIWFA League, Newry City Ladies currently occupy top spot in the league having scored a remarkable 99 goals in nine games. Fifteen of those goals have been scored by 16-year-old Moya Feehan, who recently earned a call up by National Women’s Coach, Alfie Wylie for the Northern Ireland Senior Women’s UEFA Euro 2013 qualifier away to Norway.

The SCORE Pilot Project, funded through the UEFA HatTrick programme, is a unique initiative aimed at assisting women’s football clubs in Northern Ireland to establish links with their local primary and post primary schools. In total 36 clubs are involved in the project which involves three core elements; firstly, each club nominates a coach to undertake a coach education course; secondly, the nominated coach then delivers 12 coaching sessions within primary and post primary schools; and lastly, the club endeavours to set up a junior girls’ team within their club. The ultimate aim of the project is to establish school - club links in order to encourage more girls to join local clubs.

Following on from the success of the SCORE Pilot Project, Newry City Ladies will be setting up a girls’ academy for players aged 6–14. If you require further information about the Newry City Girls’ Academy please contact John Feehan: john.feehan@design3.info or 07845 811586.
