GLENTORAN Belfast United have won the Coca-Cola Women’s Cup after a pulsating 3-2 victory over Crusaders Strikers at Mourneview Park with goals from Macklin, Milligan and McGuinness enough to bring the trophy back to east Belfast.

The Strikers settled the better of the two sides and dominated possession for the first 15 minutes without creating too many chances, but gradually GBU began to gain some control in midfield.

Just before the half hour mark, Demi Vance broke down the right, crossing to Kirsty McGuinness who cushioned a header into the path of fellow Northern Ireland international Catherine O’Hagan.  As the GBU number 10 was about to shoot she was brought down by McCarthy and the referee pointed to the spot.  Gail Macklin calmly slotted the ball home to give GBU the lead.

The Strikers immediately responded by forcing GBU onto the back foot with some direct football.  This tactic led to a succession of corners for the Strikers and Claire Carson was in the right place at the right time when the ball fell to her in the box to rifle home past the helpless Harkness in the GBU goal.  Strikers 1-1 GBU

Two minutes was all it took for GBU to score again as Caragh Milligan stole the ball from Nicola McWilliams and poke home from 12 yards to give her side a 2-1 lead going into half-time.

Crusaders Strikers again started the brighter of the two sides and scored a deserved equaliser through an Alison Smyth header with 30 minutes to go.

As the game looked to be heading for extra-time, Kirsty McGuinness harried and hassled the Crusaders defence into making a mistake, before slipping in to round the ‘keeper and score into an empty net to give the Glens a 3-2 win and lift the Coca-Cola Women’s Cup.
